Biography

Andrey Lebedev is a conductor of the Novaya Opera Theatre and of the Symphony Orchestra of the Gnessins Russian Academy of Music. He graduated from theRimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg (Prof. Kudryavtseva’s and Prof. Martynov’s class). During his 20 years of conducting he has done more than 1500 productions and concerts.

In 2000 to 2002, he worked as a conductor at the Pushkin Opera and Ballet Theatre of Nizhny Novgorod and as a guest conductor of the Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Nizhny Novgorod Philharmonic. In 2002 to 2004, he was a conductor of the Glinka Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in Chelyabinsk. In 2007 to 2013, he was the chief conductor of the Sochi Municipal Symphony Orchestra. In 2004, he became a conductor of the Leonard Gatov Musical Theatre in Krasnodar, “Premiere”, and in 2012-2014 he was its artistic director and chief conductor.

As a guest conductor, Andrey Lebedev collaborates with leading Russian and European music theatres and orchestras, including the Novaya Rossia State Symphony Orchestra (Moscow, artistic director and chief conductor Yuri Bashmet), the Russian Philharmonic Orchestra (Moscow, chief conductor Dmitri Jurowski), the orchestra of the Teatro Massimo Bellini (Catania, Italy), the Mikhailovsky Theatre (St. Petersburg), the Opera and Ballet Theatre of theRimsky-Korsakov State Conservatory in St. Petersburg and many others.

Andrey Lebedev has performed with famous instrumentalists, such as Matsuev, Gindin, Knyazev, Trostyansky, Murzha, Diev, Lidsky, and vocalists, such as Vedernikov, Kazarnovskaya, Gerzmava, Statsenko, to name a few.

He has over 40 operatic and ballet productions in his repertoire, including Bizet’s Carmen, Verdi’s Traviata and Rigoletto, Gounod’s Romeo et Juliette, Puccini’s La Boheme, Leoncavallo’s I Pagliacci, Donizetti’s L’elisir d’amore, Strauss’ Die Fledermaus, Glinka’s Ruslan and Lyudmila, Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin, The Queen of Spades and Swan Lake.

At the Glinka Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre in Chelyabinsk, he staged a number of productions, including Verdi’s Rigoletto, which was awarded the best conducting prize at the Scene-2003 Festival. The production of Tchaikovsky’s The Queen of Spades won a prize at the Theatrical Olympus Festival in Sochi in 2011.

In 2006, Andrey Lebedev joined the Novaya Opera as a guest conductor. He conducted Verdi's Rigoletto, Tchaikovsky's Iolanta in concert, Rossini and OperaMania. Since 2013, he has been a permanent conductor of the Novaya Opera. He conducted Donizetti’s Maria Stuarda in concert during the 2014 Epiphany Week, the concert of the Novaya Opera’s soloists Agunda Kulaeva and Aleksey Tatarintsev, The Music of Love, in December 2013, his own interpretation of Eugene Onegin in concert in the Svetlanov Hall of the Moscow International House of Music in 2015, with Metropolitan Opera soloist Rodion Pogosov in the title role.
