Rauf Abdullayev is a graduate of the Azerbaijan State Conservatory and the St. Petersburg State Conservatory.

Since 1965 he has been conductor of the Baku Opera and Ballet Theatre. From 1968 to 1984 he was the principal conductor of this Theatre. Since 1984 Abdullayev has been the artistic director and principal conductor of the Azerbaijan State Symphony Orchestra n. a. U. Hajibeyli. The Conductor has taken the orchestra to new a level of professionalism. Under the direction of Rauf Abdullayev the orchestra has toured to many countries.

The Abdulayev's repertoire includes music of different styles, centuries and countries. But he has a special consideration for the Azerbaijan music.

Lots of ballet, opera and symphony premiers took place under his button. He has been the organizer of many musical Festivals.
