Dejan Savić
Biography
Dejan Savić was born in Belgrade on June 27, 1957. He is a prominent Serbian conductor, music artist, pedagogue and cultural worker. He received his basic musical education on instruments cello and violin, graduated from the Secondary Music School "Mokranjac" in Belgrade at the Double Bass Department, where he graduated conducting at the Faculty of Music Arts, and at the Academy of Arts in Novi Sad, as the first in the history of this institution, he obtained the title of Master of Conducting.
His career as a conductor, Dejan Savić, he started in 1981 as a freelance artist. During that period, he worked as a professor of conducting, choir and orchestra in lower and secondary music schools, as well as conductor – artistic director of a series of choirs of cultural and artistic societies and music ensembles in Belgrade. As an instrumentalist and conductor, he is one of the founders of the Belgrade Youth Philharmonic Orchestra Borislav Pašćan.
From 1989 to 1993 Mr. Savić worked as a conductor and artistic director of the Niš Symphony Orchestra. In period 1987 – 1991, maestro appeared as the permanent guest -conductor of the ERT Greek Radio Television Choir & Orchestra. At the National Theatre in Belgrade since 1993 he was employed as a conductor of opera and ballet in 2007, and became chief conductor in 2007, where he retired in 2022. As the Director of opera and ballet, he acted from 2001 to 2004, when he was appointed General Manager of the National Theatre, as the first musical artist in its history. The first term of the director ended in 2007, when he again became Director of the Opera, where he remained in office until 2011. The second term of director lasted from 2012 to 2018, after which Dejan Savić returned to the post of Chief Conductor until his retirement. In 2021, he was appointed Cultural Advisor to the President of the Republic of Serbia. In 2024 Mr. Savić is proposed to be a member of Serbian Academy of Sciences and Arts, the most important institution of its kind in Serbia, as the first Musical Conductor in its history of almost two centuries.
As a conductor, Dejan Savić performed with all symphony orchestras and opera ensembles in Serbia and the most important in the former Yugoslavia. He has participated several times in almost all relevant festivals in the country and the region, as well as in many important music events. Abroad, he has performed in Greece, Israel, Bulgaria, The Netherlands, Germany, Romania, Ireland, Albania, England, North Macedonia, Russia, USA, China, Korea, Hong Kong, Portugal, Slovenia, France, Georgia, Italy, Croatia, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Spain, Turkey, Hungary and others, performing with many renowned orchestras and opera houses of Europe, America and Asia. His pedagogical career involves a professorial engagement as well as a series of master classes in several European countries such as Bulgaria, Portugal and Russia. As a member of the expert jury, he participated in several renowned international competitions and competitions in Italy, Romania, Russia, Bulgaria and other countries. He has given several lectures to various important companies and institutions, on the topic of management in culture. He was president or member of artistic councils or committees of various eminent international festivals and events.
Huge repertory in all musical genres, such as main opera & ballet titles, operetta, vocal – symphony and symphonic music, chamber music and a capella choral pieces, maestro Savić owes to the fact that his career involved practically all the ensembles that have to be conducted, and his permanent search for a new repertory, first performances and pieces of great value, not so known to the audience.
Mr Savić has collaborated with the world's biggest names in art music around the globe. In several countries, D. Savić recorded for Radio and TV, and realized a number of LP releases, audio cassettes, CDs and DVDs published by PGP-RTS and other companies, as well as a significant number of permanent recordings of domestic composers and soloists for the RTS sound archive. Maestro Savić is the holder of the National Recognition of the Republic of Serbia for contribution to culture, he is the winner of the biggest national prizes in culture such as Vuk Award, Golden Ring Award, and abroad – Italian Order Silver Star for merit in culture, Order of Malta Order for cultural cooperation, Russian Federation Ministry of Foreign Affairs Medal for cultural cooperation, award of Association of cultural societies and others.
