Biography

One of the most versatile artists of his generation, Mikhail Shekhtman was born in Moscow in 1989 to a Russian father and Jewish mother, both being scientific researchers. His grandfather was a tenor Avram Shekhtman.

Mikhail started to play the piano at the age of 5 and performed first solo concert in Moscow at the age of 7, Shekhtman’s first conducting & piano teachers being Elena Aleksandrova & Vera Khoroshina at the Moscow State Conservatory Academic Music College. He also studied organ in Russia and Austria. Shekhtman continued studies at the Moscow State Tchaikovsky Conservatory with Pavel Nersessian, graduating with distinction in 2013 as well as attended conducted masterclasses by Michail Jurowski & Teodor Currentzis.

Since 2014 Shekhtman plays and conducts leading orchestras in Russia and collaborates with opera singers. Notable concerts include New Year Concerts in Moscow with Russian State Chamber Orchestra & Luzern KKL with Luzern Symphony Orchestra as well as Adventliche Gala Concert with Gewandhaus Orchestra & Herbert Blomstedt.

In 2018 Shekhtman conducted  Russian State Svetlanov Symphony Orchestra performing at the Great Hall of Moscow Conservatory, repertoire included Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 1 played & conducted by Shekhtman as well as orchestral & operatic programme. In Summer 2018 Shekhtman conducted the Mariinsky Orchestra during the Festival Stars of White Nights invited by Valery Gergiev. In September 2018 Shekhtman opened season in Moscow playing Mozart 23 Concerto.

Throughout the season as pianist Shekhtman performed in London, Berlin, Madrid, Peralada, performed with Seoul Philharmonic and Seattle Symphony Orchestra. In February 2019 Mikhail Shekhtman conducted 20 years Anniverary with Oviedo Philharmonic. This season September 2019  Shekhtman conducted season opening concert with Russian National Orchestra broadcasted by Medici.tv.

Shekhtman has a special collaboration with leading opera singers performing in concert, opera and recording. Together with soprano Julia Lezhneva Maestro performed around the globe - venues include The Bolshoi Theatre, Vienna Konzerthaus, Berlin Philharmonie, Rome at the Vatican, Paris Theatre des Champs Elysees, Zurich Tonhalle, Helsinki Music Centre, Amsterdam Musikgebouw, Melbourne Recital Centre, Grand Hall of Moscow Conservatory, Hamburg Laeiszhalle, St.-Petersburg Philharmonic - and Festivals - Gstaad Menuhin Festival, Lucerne Easter, Peralada in Spain and December Nights’s Festival in Moscow.

Mikhail Shekhtman’s Decca Records CD with world-premiere project ‘Carl Heinrich Graun’ together with Julia Lezhneva has been awarded with 2018 OPUS Klassik prize in Germany and Bavarian Radio CD of the Month.
