Biography

Artistic director and principal conductor of the Samara Academic Opera and Ballet Theatre (Samara Opera), Russia.

Graduated with distinction from the Saint Petersburg State Conservatory, where he studied choral conducting under Professor and Honored Artist of Russia Elizaveta Kudryavtseva (the first female choral conductor in the USSR) and opera and symphony conducting under the Honored Artist of Russia Dmitry Khokhlov (Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the State Academic Andreyev Russian Orchestra).

Evgeny Khokhlov did an internship at the University of Music and Dramatic Arts Mozarteum Salzburg, under Professor Peter Gülke. He took master-classes with Maurizio Arena (Italy, 2013, 2014, 2016), Neeme Järvi, Paavo Järvi, and Leonid Grin (Estonia, 2009), and Roman Kofman (Germany, 2008).

In 2016, he won the first prize of the VII Luigi Mancinelli International competition of opera conductors in Orvieto, Italy. In 2020, he got a special prize of the Samara Theatre Muse Award for his musical rendition of the ballets The Fountain of Bakhchisarai and The Three Masks of the King (world premiere).

Since 2003, he has been a guest conductor of the State Academic Symphony Orchestra of the Republic of Belarus. Since 2006, he has been a conductor of the Andreyev State Russian Orchestra, Saint Petersburg). In 2007-2011, he was a conductor of the Saint Petersburg Chamber Opera.

In 2011, he became a conductor of the Samara Opera; since 2017, he has been the house’s principal conductor; in 2019, he also became the house’s artistic director.

He has produced about 20 operas and ballets at the Samara Opera. His overall repertoire includes over 40 titles: operas, ballets, and operettas – from Verdi and Puccini to Tchaikovsky and Rimsky-Korsakov to Shostakovich and living composers.

Evgeny Khokhlov started the Samara Opera’s Youth Opera Programme aimed at developing local vocal talents (2018) and became artistic director of the house’s annual opera festivals. He stood at the origin of the TE-ART Foundation that supports and promotes the Samara Opera’s projects.

Evgeny Khokhlov led the Samara Opera company at such nation-wide festivals as Golden Mask (2019, Esmeralda at the Stanislavsky Music Theatre, Moscow), Summer Ballet Seasons (2019, Russian Youth Theatre, Moscow), Videt’ Muzyku (2019, Gianni Schicchi and the Helikon-Opera, Moscow), Festival of the Future Theatre (2020, The Three Masks of the King, Maxim Gorky Theatre, Moscow).

Evgeny Khokhlov initiated and organized Samara Opera’s tour to the Mariinsky Theatre, St. Petersburg, in November 2019, with The Three Masks of the King.

In 2019, Evgeny Khokhlov was nominated for the Onegin National Opera Award as the best musical director for La bohème and Gianni Schicchi produced within less than a fortnight during the Giacomo Puccini Festival at the Samara Opera in November 2018.
