Biography

Paata Burchuladze graduated from the Tbilisi Conservatory and trained at La Scala with G. Simionato and E. Muller. He is the winner of international competitions such as “Verdian Voices” (1981), the Tchaikovsky Competition (1982) and the Luciano Pavarotti International Competition (1985). He made his debut at Covent Garden in the role of Ramfis (“Aida”, conducted by Z. Mehta), and at the Salzburg Festival, at the invitation of Herbert von Karajan, sang the role of the Commander (“Don Juan”) and then later, performed solo parts in Requiem by Mozart and by Verdi, both also conducted by Herbert von Karajan. He sang in the largest theatres of the world, including La Scala, the Metropolitan Opera, the Vienna, Bavarian and Hamburg State Operas, the Paris and Washington National Operas, the San Francisco Opera, the Berlin German Opera, the Zurich Opera and the New Tokyo National Theatre. His interpretation of the role of Boris Godunov received particular acclaim. As a chamber singer, he has performed at La Scala, the Vienna Musikverein and Konzerthaus, Covent Garden, the Stuttgart Opera (where he was awarded the title of Kammerzinger), Tonhalle and The Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona. Paata Burchuladze has an extensive discography and is the Goodwill Ambassador for the UN and UNICEF.
