Biography
Fabian Müller (*1964) is one of the leading Swiss composers of his generation. His works have been premiered and performed by great musicians of our time, such as David Zinman, Andris Nelsons, Andrey Boreyko, Sir Roger Norrington, Christopher Hogwood and many others, and were played in the prestigious halls around the world including the Carnegie Hall in New York, the Berlin Philharmonic, the Tonhalle Zurich, the KKL Luzern, the St. Petersburg Philharmonic, or the Beethoven Liederhalle in Stuttgart.
He wrote commissioned works for the Lucerne Festival, the Interlaken Music Festival or the Vestfold Festspillene in Norway, and his works were performed at the Festival La Chaise Dieux in France, the Aspen Music Festival in Colorado, at the Festival Internacional de Ushuaia in Argentina and many others.
Recent works are a Vibraphone concerto for Evenyn Glennie, which will be premiered in the Tonhalle Zurich in fall 2014, as well as «Sirimadi» for cello and orchestra, commissioned by the Swiss Embassy in Thailand as a gift for the Thailand Philharmonic Orchestra (TPO) on the 80th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Switzerland and Thailand. «Dialogues Cellestes», a Double Concerto for two cellos and orchestra for the cellists Antonio Meneses and Pi-Chin Chien was premiered 2011. «Dialogues Cellestes» was recently released on CD together with two other orchestral works «Eiger» and the «Concerto for Orchestra» with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra of London conducted by Claude Villaret.
Fabian Müller wrote for the Carmina Quartet commissioned by the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia his 2nd String Quartet «The Helvetic» (2010), and more recently for the same ensemble his fourth String Quartet. 2008 the world-renowned cellist Steven Isserlis premiered his «Concerto per Klee» in the Zurich Tonhalle and 2009 the Bern Symphony Orchestra went on tour in Germany with his symphonic work «Taranis».
Apart from other recordings, four Portrait-CDs have been released, with the Philharmonia Orchestra of London conducted by David Zinman, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, the Petersen Quartet Berlin, as well as the Zurich Chamber Orchestra on the Labels «ARS Produktion», «col legno», «Capriccio» and «Musiques Suisses». Recent CD-releases include «Munchs Traum(a)» a commissioned work by Norwegian violinist Henning Kraggerud for the label SIMAX, as well as 20 song-transcriptions recorded by clarinetist Fabio di Casola and the Zurich Chamber Orchestra for SONY.
Fabian Müller began as a cellist (he studied with Claude Starck at the Zurich Conservatory) and has increasingly dedicated his energies to composition. His first composition teacher was Josef Haselbach (Conservatory Zurich). He spent several years at the Aspen Music Festival (Colorado) and studied there with George Tsontakis, Jacob Druckman and Bernard Rands. In 1996 he won the composition prize at the Aspen Music Festival (Jacob Druckman Award for Orchestral Composition). 2006 he received for his work until to date an award from the canton of Zurich. And in 2012 he was awarded the «Zollikon Art Prize».
Besides his activities as a composer Fabian Müller is interested in ethnomusicology. He is considered as one of the authoritative thought leaders and innovators of Swiss folk music and is author and editor of various music collections. For ten years (1991 to 2002), he worked in the publishing of the Hanny Christen Collection, a ten-volume anthology of folk music with more than 10`000 melodies from the 19th Century.
