Biography

Alexey Zhilin was born in 1987 in Leningrad. He graduated from the St Petersburg Special School of Music and St Petersburg Conservatoire (class of Anatoly Nikitin). He also has participated in master-classes of such world-known musicians as Yo-Yo Ma, Natalia Shakhovskaya, Jens Peter Maintz, David Geringas, T. Swan, Tsuyoshi Tsusumi, Ivan Monighetti and Alexander Rudin. The musician frequently performs in recital both in Russia and abroad. Alexey is a soloist of the St Petersburg House of Music, leader of the MusicAeterna cello section (Artistic Director – Teodor Currentzis) and a cellist with the David Oistrakh Quartet.

At the age of twelve, Alexey Zhilin won his first victory at the Moscow International Competition. Since then he has performed to great acclaim on numerous occasions at Russian and international competitions, among them the String Instruments Competition in Gérardmer (2005), the Yelsky Competition in Minsk (2007) and the Mravinsky Competition in St Petersburg (1st prize, 2008). In 2010 Zhilin was awarded 2nd prize at the All-Russian Music Competition in Moscow and 3rd prize at the Brahms International Competition (Austria), while in 2011 he took 2nd prize at the Dr Luis Sigall International Competition (Chile). In November 2012 Alexey Zhilin was awarded 2nd prize at the Isang Yun International Competition in South Korea, one of the world’s most prestigious cello competitions.
