Gleb Filshtinsky

Biography

Born in 1970 in Leningrad. Graduated from the St Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts, specializing in “Decorative Theatre Art”.

In 1990 he made his debut as a lighting designer in a production of Fahrenheit 451 by the St Petersburg Youth Art Theatre (production by Vasily Sazonov).
Over the course of Filshtinsky’s twenty-five-year-long career he has taken part in over three hundred drama and musical productions.

He has been involved in productions mounted by leading Russian theatres including the Maly Drama Theatre-Theatre of Europe, the Bolshoi Theatre of Russia, the Alexandrinsky Theatre, the Mariinsky Theatre, the Tovstonogov Bolshoi Drama Theatre, the Baltic House Theatre Festival, the Novosibirsk Opera and Ballet Theatre, the Moscow Operetta Theatre, the Boris Eifman Ballet Theatre, the Moscow Young Spectators Theatre, the Stanislavsky and Nemirovich-Danchenko Musical Theatre the Moscow Chekhov Arts Theatre, the Akimov Comedy Theatre, Et Cetera directed by Alexander Kalyagin and the Sovremennik Theatre in Moscow.

Currently he frequently works outside Russia. Theatres with which he collaborates include the Opéra de Paris, the Schaubühne in Berlin, the Teatro Real (Madrid), English National Opera (London), the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie (Brussels), the Burgtheater (Vienna), the Bayerische Staatsoper (Munich), the Teatro alla Scala (Milan), the Metropolitan Opera (New York), the Deutsche Staatsoper (Berlin), the Netherlands Opera (Amsterdam), the Salzburg Festival and the Zurich Opera.
Has created the lighting and other stage designs for several musicals, among them North-East, Monte Christo, An Everyday Miracle, Count Orlov and The Scarlet Sails.

Frequently works on stage designs, directing, multimedia and major high-tech shows. He founded and is Artistic Director of the St Petersburg-based Show-Consulting set design and stage technology studio.
Director of the Masters department of the St Petersburg Academy of Theatre Arts, specialising in Management of Creative and Technological Processes in Contemporary Theatre.

Several-times recipient of Russias national Golden Mask theatre prize, participant in the Prague Quadrennial international set design and stage space exhibition, recipient of Latvias National Theatre Arts Prize, recipient of Estonias National Theatre Arts Prize and recipient of the Facets of Theatre for the Masses All-Russian prize for major forms of theatre art.
