Штефан Кордес

<p> Stefan Kordes studied organ (solist class) and sacred music („A“-degree) in Hamburg, Stuttgart and Vienna. Among the teachers, who had a formative influence are to be counted Bernhard Haas, Jon Laukvik, Burkhard Meyer-Janson and Michael Radulescu (organ), Leopold Hager, Dieter Kurz and Volker Wangenheim (conducting), Marco Antonio de Almeida, Peter-Jürgen Hofer and Renate Werner (piano) as well as Jon Laukvik and Isolde Zerer (harpsichord). He was granted a scholarship by the „Studienstiftung des deutschen Volkes" and has won awards in several international organ competitions (among them Odense/Denmark and Ljubljana/Slovenia). He took part in several master classes thus enlarging his repertoire. His teachers were Marie-Claire Alain, Jean Boyer, Hans Fagius, André Isoir, Ewald Kooiman, Gaston Litaize, Ludger Lohmann, Andrea Marcon, Daniel Roth, Luigi Ferdinando Tagliavini, Harald Vogel and Wolfgang Zerer. </p> <p> He worked as a church musician in Heidenheim and Wuppertal. Since 2001 he has been cantor and organist at St. Jacobi (St. James) in Göttingen. </p> <p> It is part of his duties to conduct the choir (120 members) and the chamber choir (40 members). Apart from that he is the art director of the „International organ days St. James" as well as of a series of concerts called „30 minutes of Organ Music on Friday Evenings“, which have taken place more than 1800 times since 1968. </p> <p> Various concert engagements as an organist have led him so far to Austria, Croatia, Denmark, France (Paris: St. Sulpice, St. Étienne-du-Mont, Falaise), Great Britain, Latvia (Cathedral of Riga), Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, Slovenia, South Africa and the Czech Republic. In Russia he played concerts in Archangelsk, Jaroslavl, Kirov and St. Petersburg (Concert hall) and others. In addition to that, he took part in various festivals in Germany (Frauenkirche Dresden, Kreuzkirche Dresden and several others). When the New Bach Edition was finished in 2007, he was invited by the New Bach Society to play Bachs „Kunst der Fuge“ during a big ceremony to celebrate the occasion. </p> <p>   </p> <p> In 2005 Stefan Kordes played Bach´s complete works for organ in a series of 25 concerts in St. James Göttingen. Apart from a series of the complete works for organ by Alain, C.P.E. Bach, Brahms, Bruhns, Couperin, Duruflé, Franck, de Grigny, Guilain, Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Muffat and Schumann, he played Olivier Messiaens´ complete works for organ on the occasion of his 100<sup>th</sup> anniversary. </p> <p>  In 2001 he recorded a CD in cooperation with the Wolga virtuosos with the „Pictures at an Exhibition“ and the „Songs and Dances of Death“ by Modest Mussorgski in arrangement for plucked orchestra and organ. In 2007 Kordes recorded the first CD on the renovated Ott/Schmid-organ at St. James Göttingen playing works by Bach, Buxtehude, Duruflé, Lindberg, Muffat and Pierné. The CD was hailed by the trade press. The CD was followed in 2011 by „The Charm of Organ Music by Johann Sebastian Bach“ and in 2012 „The Charm of French Organ Music“. </p> <p> He also recorded music for the radio and TV. </p> <p>  Stefan Kordes has conducted oratorios from the Renaissance to music by contemporary composers, among them Bach, Beethoven (9. symphonie, Choral fantasie), Bernstein (Chichester psalms), Blacher (The Großinquisitor), Boulanger (Psalm 24, 129, 130), Brahms (Requiem), Britten (War Requiem), Bruckner (Te deum), Duruflé (Requiem), Dvořák (Stabat mater, Requiem, Te deum), Eben (Jacobus (first release), Jeremias (Oper, scenic)), Elgar (The dream of Gerontius), Eybler (christmas oratorio), Fauré (Requiem), Franck (Les Béatitudes), Händel (Israel in Egypt, Karmelitervesper, Alexanders Feast, Brockes Passion), Haydn, Honegger (King David), Mauersberger (Dresdner Requiem), Mendelssohn (Elias, psalms), Messiaen (Trois petites liturgies), Monteverdi (Marienvesper), Orff (Carmina burana), Poulenc (Gloria), Puccini, Rachmaninoff (Vesper), Rossini, Schmidt (The book with seven seals), Schönberg (A survivor from Warsaw), Scriabin, Strawinsky (Symphony of psalms), Verdi (Requiem, Quattro pezzi sacri), Verdi et al. (Messa per Rossini), Zelenka and Zemlinsky (Psalm 13 and 23). </p> <p>  He also worked as a conductor with symphony orchestras, performing works by Beethoven (2. and 5. symphony), Borodin (dances from Polowetz), Brahms (2. and 4. Symphonie, Haydn-variations, Tragic Overture), Bruckner (Romantic symphony), Duruflé (dances), Dvořák (symphony „from the New world“), Guilmant (1. symphony), Mahler (Kindertotenlieder), Messiaen (Les offrandes oubliées), Rachmaninoff (Symphonic dances), Ravel (Daphnis et Chloë, Alborada), Saint-Saëns (Symphony for orchestra and organ), Schostakowitsch (1. piano concerto), Schubert (symphony „Unvollendete“). </p> <p>  And last but not least, Stefan Kordes gives concerts as a pianist, chamber musician and accompanist in lieder recitals. </p>
