Biography

Bestowed with the high honour of ”Honoured Artist of the Russian Federation”(2006), Alexander Polishchuk was born in 1960 in Kiev, Ukraine. At Kiev Conservatory (1978-1983) he studied Choral Conducting as well as optional Orchestral Conducting.In 1986 he entered to the Leningrad Conservatory at the Department of Opera-Symphonic Conducting (Musin`s class), and graduated in 1991.

A prize-winner at the Sixth All-Union Conductors’ Competition (USSR) in 1988, Polishchuk has, since 1990, performed regularly with the legendary Saint Petersburg Philharmonic.

Since 1989 he is touring as guest Conductor throughout the Russia. In 1994 V.Gergiev appointed him to be assistant conductor at Mariinsky (Kirov) theatre for new Production of the Opera ”Katherine Izmailova” by Shostakovich. From 1995- Resident Conductor of the Theatre.

In 1991, Polishchuk was appointed Principal Conductor of the St. Petersburg Municipal Symphony Orchestra, where he remained for four years. In 1996, Polishchuk became Artistic Director and Principal Conductor of the St. Petersburg State city Symphony Orchestra.

In 1998, Alexander Polishchuk was appointed Chief Guest Conductor of the Russian Chamber Orchestra of London, Great Britain.

From 2001 he has been Principal Guest Conductor of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic Orchestra, also served as Artistic Director, Principal Conductor of the Chamber Orchestra of the Novosibirsk Philharmonic (2001-2008).

Among the orchestras A.Polishchuk appeared with – Tonkuenstler Orchestra, Tokyo New city Orchestra, National Taiwan Symphony Orchestra, Netherlands Radio Philharmonic, State Chamber Orchestra of Russia, Novosibirsk Philharmonic, Ukraine National Philharmonic (Kiev), Vilnius State Symphony Orchestra, RSAMD Symphony Orchestra (Glasgow), Singapore National Youth Symphony Orchestra, Russian Youth Philharmonic (tour in Germany), Russian National Orchestra (Pletnev’s); Orchestra of the Mariinsky Theatre at the Mariinsky Concert Hall, Moldova State Philharmonic Orchestra, Wiener Konzert Verein Orchestra.

Also toured in Portugal, China, Korea, Kazakhstan, Switzerland, Denmark, Hungary, Finland. Latvia etc.

Mr. Polishchuk has appeared at many of the most important international festivals including the “Stars of the White Nights” festival in St. Petersburg, “Pablo Casals Festival” in France, Mikkeli Festival etc.

A.Polishchuk worked with different opera and ballet companies: - Musical Theatre at St.Petersburg Conservatory; the Mussorgsky Opera & Ballet Theatre (now the St. Petersburg Mikhailovsky Theatre); at the Mariinsky Theatre (Saint Petersburg); Helikon-Opera (Moscow); Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet House; Covent Garden ( London,new production); National Opera and Ballet House, Kiev (Ukraine); Academic Opera and Ballet House Ulan-Ude, (Russia) etc.

Since 1993 – teaching at St. Petersburg State Music Conservatory.

Alexander Polishchuk is currently - Resident Conductor at the St.Petersburg House of Music.
